Frequently Asked Questions

I already planned my finances, what else is there to plan?
FutureDecisions is working on creating another word for retirement because Baby Boomers will not be “retiring” in the same way as previous generations. You will not have your parents generation’s retirement. The statistics indicate that you will live longer, be healthier and need additional funds to live the lifestyle you wish to live. If you retire at 60 you will probably experience twenty to thirty years of productive life. Additionally, if you are like 80% of your generation, you want to work, just not in your current field. For the second half of your life to be all you could want it to be, you need to plan.

What is the biggest challenge to retirement?
Work typically occupies 33 percent of an average day. One of the biggest challenges is creating meaningful activities to fill the time that work used to fill. Studies show recent retirees can spend up to 42 hours per week watching television, implying a need to structure their time more creatively. We think that all we will want to do is leisure activities such as playing golf, but you can only play so much golf.

What Else Can I expect in transitioning to retirement?
Many people experience a sense of loss, particularly a loss of identity. The second is a sense of fear of ‘how am I going to replace the kind of affirmation that I got from work. With the absence of affirmation professionals get from their careers and with no boss or business demanding their expertise anymore, retirees are often left searching for another way to obtain affirmation of their self worth.

On a positive note, many retirees begin looking for ways to give back to their communities. Volunteerism is increasing in people over 55 and many people are going back to school to learn new skills to put to use in professions that assist others.
